Grenache, the global grape with character
This year, Vinexpo Hong Kong’s grape day highlights the Grenache grape and its plural declinations. It’s one of the most widely planted red grape in the world and responsible for the velvety, voluptuous mouthfeel blends that people love in wine.
Grenache comes in 3 versions: red Grenache (or Grenache Noir), white Grenache (or Grenache Blanc) which is a popular blending grape in France also used in wine producing regions all over the world, and another version of white Grenache known as Grenache Gris used to make white wines as well. Grenache’s pale color makes it a popular grape in the production of Rosé wines.
It is a grape that enjoys warm climates and worldwide popularity: originally grown in Spain where old vine Granacha is an important grape, especially in the Priorat appellation. Grenache is also planted in Australia, Italy, Southern of France, South and North America (mainly California) and South Africa. Some winemakers use it as an exclusive variety, but it is often blended with other grapes like Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsault.
About the Grenache Association
Created in 2010, non-for-profit organization dedicated to Grenache, the purpose of the Grenache Association is to bring greater awareness of this great grape. It provides information on Grenache, educates professionals and individuals, promotes the variety through workshops and wine tastings, and sustains it in the vineyards and in the glass!
